Working at Walkro: Benny Tijssen wants nothing more
Benny Tijssen is a real hand in the business. He has been in his cab as a truck driver at Walkro for 17 years. For him, it is his second home, with a close-knit team of drivers around him. He offers newcomers a warm welcome, making them feel just as at home. An inspiration to anyone who wants to work as a driver.
Working as a driver at Walkro
The key in the socket, foot on the accelerator and just drive? No way. Transporting mushroom compost involves more than you might think. For instance, Benny often switches between the factory and the customer. After all, as a driver you have a lot of influence on where the compost ends up.
"Unloading involves a lot of teamwork with other drivers. I like that as a challenge and it brings excitement to my work. We are often unloading with different colleagues. Because of my experience, I know how best to do that. So I manage that. If the unloading work goes smoothly, I really have a good day."
A big step
In his younger years, Benny drove his truck a lot through France, being away from home all week. The ideal situation for him, as he loves the long drives. The move to Walkro - and thus to shorter drives - was therefore quite a change, but the best choice for his family.
"I am still happy with my choice every day. By not always being on the road, you fit in better with society. My wife got more space to work as well. And my children loved it. They told me what they experienced at school and felt more seen and appreciated by their father."
"It took me about five years to land completely. And the long drives are still my favourite."
That's why he reports to Walkro every month for a 400-kilometre drive south.
You can rely on our team
The team of drivers is getting closer and closer. Benny has a big part in that. For instance, he transformed the empty canteen into a cosy drivers' lounge. "In the morning we get together to have a cup of coffee and after work we regularly chat there. We also organise an annual festive event and provide tasty flans when colleagues have their birthdays."
"I am proud of what we manage to achieve together here. Everyone takes responsibility and that gives a good feeling."
Benny also designed a clothing line especially for his fellow drivers. And that is appreciated. "They regularly order a T-shirt, hoodie or polo via the group app. They then receive a personalised garment with the driver's logo. This brings the group even closer together".
In my spot at Walkro
Benny would prefer to continue working at Walkro until his retirement. "Provided I can handle it physically, because it's quite tough sometimes." Yet the many benefits outweigh the hard work. "Walkro is a very social company. We have good equipment and the salary is good too. The management is very committed. Even if things are not going well privately for a while, for example. People listen and we look for a solution together."
In short, Benny is right at home at Walkro!
