Who is Walkro?
Walkro ensures growth. By converting residual flows into grown substrate, we contribute to a sustainable food chain with people, the environment and the future in mind.
Sustainable growth starts with us!
Walkro makes an important contribution to a healthy food chain. Our substrate is the basis for around 30% of mushroom cultivation in Northwest Europe, good for over 3.5 million kilos of mushrooms per week, and we are proud of that!
Our strength lies in our people. With a down-to-earth approach, we work on a better chain and living environment every day. Walkro is more than just a producer: we are a driver of circular agriculture, a partner in circularity and a committed employer in the region.
How it all started
In 1991, Walkro was founded in Maasmechelen, Belgium. What started as a production site for mushroom substrate soon grew into an organisation with several locations in the Netherlands, Belgium and Germany through acquisitions and expansions. The foundation for what Walkro is today was laid in those early years.

Linking sectors
Walkro connects mushroom cultivation with poultry and horse farming. Every year, we process over 570,000 tonnes of raw materials, such as horse manure, straw and chicken manure, into high-quality substrate for healthy mushrooms.
We collect horse manure from about 1,200 riding stables in the Netherlands, Belgium and Germany. This is how we solve a manure problem and give residual flows a second life within the circular chain.
Using a careful production process, we supply grown substrate directly to mushroom farms. In doing so, we contribute to a strong regional sector, a sustainable food chain and the protein transition.
Who we work for
Walkro is the link between two worlds. We work for horse and poultry farmers by upgrading their residual flows. And for mushroom growers who need high-quality grown substrate to grow healthy mushrooms. Together, we close the loop.
The people behind Walkro
Walkro ensures growth. For our products and customers, but especially for the people who work here. With a down-to-earth attitude, professionalism and a strong team spirit, we put our shoulders to the wheel every day. In an environment where you can be yourself and continue to develop, together we make the difference.
