Substrate for mushroom cultivation

At Walkro, we produce substrate specially developed for mushroom cultivation. What starts out as horse manure, poultry manure and straw is processed by us into a high-quality base for successful cultivation.

We have been doing this for decades and manage the entire process in-house: from raw materials to delivery to the grower.

What does Walkro supply?

Walkro supplies fully colonised substrate (phase 3). This means that the substrate is completely colonised by mushroom mycelium and is ready for immediate use in cultivation.

The substrate is produced at several sites in the Netherlands, Belgium and Germany and supplied to growers both at home and abroad.

How is the substrate made?

The base consists of: horse manure, poultry manure, straw and gypsum.
These raw materials are carefully mixed and undergo a controlled process.

First comes the composting process, during which bacteria do their work. This is followed by pasteurisation to remove unwanted organisms and make the substrate suitable for cultivation.
The substrate is then inoculated with mushroom mycelium and given time to grow through completely under controlled conditions.

What do you get as a grower?

You will receive a ready-to-use substrate that:

  • has fully matured (phase 3)
  • ready for immediate use
  • consists of a natural and carefully formulated base

This ensures a good start to the growing process.

Quality and control

As the substrate is a natural product, quality control is vital. That is why Walkro continuously monitors the quality of raw materials and the production process.

This is achieved, amongst other things, by:

  • raw material analysis
  • controlled production
  • Maintaining hygiene during inoculation
  • monitoring during the growth phase

Delivery and collaboration

Walkro handles not only production but also delivery. We work with an extensive logistics network and ensure a reliable supply of substrate. Together, we’ll work out what suits your business and cultivation schedule.
